PERCHTA also known as Berchta or Percht; previously known as a goddess in Southern Germanic paganism in the Alpine countries. Her name means “the bright one” and is potentially related to the name Berchtentag, meaning the feast of the Epiphany. Initially Perchta was considered a minor benevolent deity, however her reputation mutated to that of an enchanted creature (spirit or elf). She was then later personified as a sorceress or witch with a malevolent character.
